The Bible is
the most translated book in history. Every Catholic family has
the obligation to keep a copy of the Bible in their homes. With
this intention, in 1968, Pastoral Oriented Centre of Kerala
Catholic Bishop’s Council started a project of translating the
whole Bible into Malayalam. With the appointment of K. C.B. C.
Bible Commission in 1976, the pace of the project was accelerated.
The translation of the New Testament was the primary attempt. It
was published in December 1977. ‘The Nestle Greek Text’ was used
as the prime authoritative source. Besides, almost all
translations available in English and Malayalam and modern
translations in Greek, German, French and Italian were also used.
Preparation for the translation of Old Testament commenced in the
beginning of the year 1978. The Malayalam version of the Bible
comprising both the Old Testament and New Testament was first
published in 1981. Its second edition was published in 1986 with
lingual conformity achieved. Third edition with the same sentence
structures, but the numbers placed at the beginning of the
sentence, was published in August 2001. Around 17 lakhs copies of
the Bible are published until today. |
