The Catholic Church in Kerala has taken a missionary step to offer qualitative education to all by establishing as many institutions as possible  in almost all parts of the State.   Inorder to co-ordinate, support and promote such institutions and the activities of the educators, the Catholic Bishop’s Council of Kerala had Established a Commission.


.To act as catalyst to the education mission of the Catholic Church in Kerala.

.To formulate action plans for the educational growth of young generation with special care for the poor and the needy of the society.

.To train and equip youngsters for leadership in the Church and in the society 

  • To train all teachers and non-teaching staff of all the institutions with Gospel values and encourage them to participate in the building up of the society.
  • To interact with government and other agencies who are engaged in the process of education to bring out a clarity of thought and vision in educating the future generation.
  • To co-ordinate, support and promote the functions and activities of the association of  Managers, Teachers, Non-teaching staff and Students  of the institutions.
  • To uphold and to stand for the Minority Rights of the educational institutions of the Catholic Church in Kerala, as enshrined in the Indian Constitution.

The KCBC Commission for Education under the able leadership of His Grace Mar Andrews Thazhath, Archbishop of Thrissur, engaged itself effectively and meaningfully during the reporting period. The other members of the Commission are His Excellency Rt. Rev. Dr. Vincent Samuel, Bishop of Neyyattinkara and His Excellency Samuel Mar Irenios, Auxilary Bishop of Thriuvananthapuram, Malankara Archdiocese. Fr. Jacob G. Palackappilly, Archdiocese of Ernakulam-Angamaly, serves as Secretary to the Commission from 27th May 2013 onwards.

The Commission was very vigilant on the issues that were related to the mission of education of the Church. Whenever the situation compelled, its voices were head to the public through visual and print media. High level meetings were organized and written representations were placed before the concerned authorities from time to time.

A one-day career guidance class was conducted for HSS students on 6th December 2014 at POC. 65 students from all parts of Kerala attended the class.

The Education Institutions are grouped in to three zones in Kerala - The North, Central and South.  The Commission had organized zonal level meetings of the heads of Catholic Institutions for Education. The first meeting was held at North Zone on 15th January in the Mother of God Cathedral Auditorium at Kozhikode. His Excellency Rt. Rev. Dr. Varghese Chakkalackal, Bishop of Kozhikode inaugurated the gathering.  His Excellency Mar Remigios Inchananiyil, Bishop of Thamarassery presided over the function. Rev. Fr. Joseph Manippadam SDB, Secretary, CBCI Commission for Education and Culture was the chief guest. Msgr.  Thomas Panackal, Fr. Shibu Kalarickal,  Rev.Fr. Jacob G. Palackappilly and Sri. Joshy Vadakkan addressed the gathering. 250 participants representing 10 Dioceses were gathered to discuss on Catholic Education policy 2007 of CBCI and it was a fruitful gathering.

            The Central Zone convention was held on 16th January 2015 at Ernakulam Ashirbhavan, His Grace Most Rev. Dr. Francis Kallarackal, Archbishop of Verapoly, inaugurated the function. His Eminence Arch Bishop Mar Andrews Thazhath, Chairman of KCBC Commission for Education presided over the meeting. Rev. Fr. Joseph Manippadam SDB presented the Catholic Education Policy of CBCI. P.O.C. Director Rev. Fr. Varghese Vallikkat, Zonal director Rev. Fr. Antony Chillithissery, Sri. M.L.Xavier, Rev. Fr. Felix Chullickal and Rev.Fr. Jacob G. Palackappilly addressed the gathering. 250 participants from among 10 Dioceses were present in the gathering.

            South zone convention was held on 17th January 2015 at Kristujyothi Animation Centre, Kottiyam, Kollam. His Excellency Rt. Rev. Dr. Stanley Roman, Bishop of Kollam inaugurated the function. Bishop Dr. Joshua Mar Ignathios, Bishop of Mavelikkkara presided over the meeting. Rev. Fr. Joseph Manippadam SDB presented the Catholic Policy on Education. Rev. Fr. Yohannan Mulamoottil, Zonal Director, Fr. Joseph Puthenpura, Sri Joshy Vadakkan, Sri. Joseph Nelluvely, Sri. J. Mariadas and Rev. Fr. Jacob G. Palalckappilly  addressed the gathering. 200 representatives of 10 dioceses were gathered for the function.

            The Education Commission had organized a high level meeting on 9th March 2015 at Sri. K.M. Mani’s Residence (then Hon’ble Fincnace Minister of Kerala) to discuss the issues on General Education sector. Sri. Oommen Chandy, Chief Minister of Kerala, Sri. Ramesh Chennithala, Home Minister, Sri. Kunhjalikutty, Industrial Minister, Sri. Abdurubb, Education Minister, Sri. K.C. Joseph, Cultural Minister, Sri. Sukumaran Nair, NSS General Secretary, Sri. Vellappally Nadesan, SNDP. General Secretary, Archbishop His Grace Mar Andrews Thazhath, Chairman, KCBC Commission for Education, Bishop Dr. Samuel Mar Irenios, Vice Chairman, KCBC Commission for Education, Rev. Fr. Jose Karuvelickal and Rev.Fr. Jacob G. Palalckappilly were present in the meeting.

            The Commission had conducted Managerial Training Programmes for the heads of Self Financial colleges and Schools. The first batch training programme was held from 19th to 23rd January 2015 at P.O.C. Rev. Fr. Varghese Vallikkat, Director POC inaugurated the function. 25 Mangers from different institutions participated. The resource persons were from among Advocates, Chartered Accountants and other experts. The second batch was held from 9th to 13th February 2015 at P.O.C. Rev. Fr. George Madathiparambil inaugurated the programme. 48 Managers from different institutions participated. The third batch was held from 16th to 20th February at P.O.C. Rev. Fr. Antony Kollannoor, Curia Chancellor, Syro-Malabar Church inaugurated. 41 Managers participated. The fourth batch was held from 7th to 11th April at P.O.C and Rev. Fr. Jacob G. Palackappilly inaugurated the programme. 42 Managers participated. The fifth batch was held from 20th to 24th April at Renewal Centre, Kaloor. His Excellency Mar Jose Puthenveettil, Auxillary Bishop of Ernakulam-Angamaly Archdiocese inaugurated. 49 Managers were participated.

            A 15 days training for Departmental Test was held from 11th to 25th April 2015 at P.O.C. 20 participants who are aspiring for the post of HM’s in the Aided Schools  participated. Rev. Fr. Varghese Vallikkat, Director POC inaugurated.

A 30 days long Counselling course started from 15th April 2015 at P.O.C. Bishop Joseph Mar Thomas inaugurated the training programme. 20 participants were there and it concluded on 15th May 2015. Each participant was honoured with certificates issued by the Commission.

            Two days corporate Managers’ legal aid training programme was inaugurated by Bishop Dr. Samuel Mar Irenios on 5th May 2015 at P.O.C. 38 Managers were present for the two days training.

The sixth batch legal training programme was conducted at Niveditha Alwaye from 18th to 22nd May 2015. About 63 participants were participated from different educational institutions.

And on 20th May 2015 the Annual Programme Calendar of Catholic Teachers’ Guild was published by Bishop Dr. Samuel Mar Irenios at the inaugural meeting of the annual activities of Catholic Teachers’ Guild, at P.O.C. Prof. Cyric Thomas, former member of National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions, was the chief guest.

The seventh batch legal training for English Medium School Principals was conducted at Niveditha Alwaye from 10th to 12th July 2015. About 23 participants from different English medium schools participated.

A high level meeting was organized in the official residence of Minister Mr. K.M. Mani at Thiruvananthapuram on 6th July 2015. Chief Mnister Sri. Oommen Chandy, and the Minsters Sri. Remesh Chennithala, Sri. K.C. Joseph, Sri. K. M. Mani, Sri. Abdu Rubb, religious community leaders like N.S.S. general secretary Sri. Sukumaran Nair, S.N.D.P. General secretary Sri. Vellappally Nadesan, K.C.B.C President Cardinal Moaron Mar Cleemis Catholicos, KCBC Education Commission Vice chairman Bishop Dr. Samuel Mar Irenios, Rev. Fr. Jose Karuvelickal, Rev. Fr. Mathew Chandrankunnel, Rev. Fr. Jacob G. Palackappilly and Government officials like Principal Secretaries of Finance and Education and other officials participated in the meeting. A hot discussion was held on the matters of General Education.

In August there were two legal training programmes at Niveditha,Alwaye from 7th to 9th and 24th to 26th. 35 and 30 Principals participated from different English Medium Schools respectively.

On September 5th the National Teachers Day was celebrated at St. Thomas College Auditorium, Thrissur as a protest convention against State Government’s negative attitude towards Teachers’ package.

The 10th legal training programme was conducted from 19th to 21st September 2015 at Niveditha Alwaye. 27 Principals from different English Medium Schools participated in it.

The Catholic Techers’ Guild organized state wide Dharnas at District Head quarters on 3rd October 2015. The State programme was at Kozhikode. Bishop Mar Remigiose Inchananiyil inaugurated the state programme at Kozhikode. Bishop Rt. Rev Dr.Varghese Chakkalackal presided over the function.

On 20th October 2015, the Vice chairman KCBC Commission for Education, Bishop Dr. Samuel Mar Irenios, and Bishops Mar Remigiose Inchananiyil, Mar Jacob Manathodath and Rev Fr. Jacob Palackappilly went to Thiruvananthapuram and met Chief Minister and discussed the Education issues and submitted a Memorandum.

KCBC Commission for Education.


In the year of centenary, KCSL is entering into its fullness of service to the cause of Catholic students’ formation in the Schools across the state of Kerala under the guidance of KCBC. It spreads its wings to the 25 Catholic Dioceses in Kerala and it includes 6000 Catholic schools and nearly 6 lakhs students as its members. KCSL established in 1915 at Trichinapilli in Tamilnadu holds also a great title as one and only earliest student organization in worldwide of its kind.

Year after year the organisation carries out its unique mission through innovative camps and seminars, a variety of study programs on Saints and contemporary topics, value and faith formation programs. This student Pastoral care is done through a variety of learning approaches like books, study circles, quiz, group discussions and other literary competitions, seminars and retreats and the like.

The central theme for training sessions of the last two years was ‘the Catholic Church and its services’ and ‘KCSL for the Church and for the society’. With these two thematic focuses a number of training sessions, seminars, quiz, essay and elocution competitions, and media presentations have been held at the State, Diocesan and Schools levels.

 The inauguration of the KCSL centenary year and State Kalolsavam was held on 9th and 10th January 2015 at Archdiocese of Changanacherry. More than 1000 highly talented Catholic students and their Animators participated in the programmes and contests. The five days’ State Leadership Camp, “Sevana Darsan 2015” was held at Trivandrum Malankara Archdiocese. 260 student leaders from all over the State participated and gained from the programme.

Arch Bishop His Grace Mar Andrews Thazhath, the patron of KCSL inaugurated the State Animators’ Conference, which was the first major program of the academic year. It was held on 12th and 13th June 2015 at POC, Palarivattom. A state-level seminar was held on this occasion. Rev. Fr. Jose Kottayil and Adv. Charley Paul presented papers.

On 13th June 2015, KCSL family gathering was held at POC. It was really a ‘koinonia’ of all the living members of KCSL family. The gathering was titled as ‘Poorva Samithi 2015’. It was inaugurated by Justice J.M. James and all the senior members of KCSL were rewarded by Mementos.

The State level inauguration of KCSL activities were held at St. Mary’s School Ernakulam hosted by the Archdiocese of Ernakulam - Angamaly.

The centenary year leadership camp was held at Idukki on 10th and 11th July 2015.

One of the prestigious ceremonies in the centenary year was the National Education Symposium which was held at SBHS School Changanacherry on 10th September, 2015. Archbishop His Grace Mar Joseph Perumthottam inaugurated the function.  Arch Bishop Mar Joseph Powathil (Bishop Emirtus), Dr. -Cyriac Thomas, Dr. Jancy James, Prof. K.S. Radhakrishnan and Rev. Sr. Nikila  presented the papers.

The great mega event of KCSL, “Satabdi Mahasangam 2015” was held at National Shrine Basilica of Vallarpadam under the Archdiocese of Verapoly on 2015 October 02 Friday 01.00 pm. It was inaugurated by His Beatitude Moran Mor  Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos. Key-note address was given by Arch Bishop His Grace Mar Andrews Thazthath and benedictory address was given by Arch Bishop His Grace Most   Rev. Dr. Francis Kallarakkal and Arch bishop His Grace  Mar Joseph Perumthottam.  Bishop His Excellency Rt. Rev. Dr. Stephen Athipozhiyil, Dr. Boby Chemmannur, Bishop Dr. Joseph Mar Thomas, Bishop His Excellency Mar Sebastian Adayanthrath, Bishop His Excellency Mar George Madathikandathil and Bishop Dr. Philipose Mar Stephanos  graced the occasion with their esteemed presence. The Mahasangam was started with a rally of 5000 students. About 15000 students from 25 Dioceses of Kerala participated in the Mahasangamam. Above all the centenary celebrations were depicted in the history of KCSL with golden letters.

As I conclude my report I request your prayers and generous support for all our efforts to impart a relevant Catholic formation to our young generation. Do own up KCSL, stand by it and offer encouragement.
