Antonysamy

About Us

The Latin Catholic Diocese of Sultanpet, Palakkad, Kerala, was erected on 28th December 2013. This new diocese is divided mostly from the Diocese of Coimbator (16 Parishes) and of Calicut (5 parishes).
The first bishop of this new Diocese is Msgr. Antonysamy Peter Abir, a priest from the Archdiocese of Pondicherry, now going to serve the new Diocese of Palacalicherri, a former name of Palakkad noted by Frair Fratres Paolino, Vicar of Verapolly in 1787.
The first missionary of this Palakkad area was Fr. Brot Boclair, and MEP missionary in 1840. While Fr. Parone (in 1760s), a Jesuit missionary, is considered to be the founder of Christianity in this area (Kovilpalayam is the birth place of the Latin Catholics of Palakkad area, started around 1790) Fr. Joseph Bardou, MEP. (later became the Bishop of Coimbatore) was the Father and Founder of the Diocese of Sultanpet.
When he was the parish Priest of Palakkad between 1860-1865 he built a magnificent Church, today it is the Cathedral at Sultanpet, Palakkad, in 1862. Also he urged Msgr. Ajoty, the then Delegate Appostolic in India, to erect a new Diocese of Sultanpet. Accordingly Msgr. Ajoty submitted to Rome in 1880 a request to erect a new Episcopal See at Palakkad.
